    stonehenge

Stonehenge and its environs are part of a World Heritage Site and described by English Heritage as ‘…one of the wonders of the world’. Its great stones were raised more than 4,000 years ago.

At first sight the stones appear a jumble of different sizes, randomly strewn over a small area. On closer inspection the layout and the difference between the stones becomes apparent.

What is not clear is ‘What was Stonehenge used for?’ It is a mystical monument with some of the stones coming from the Preseli Hills in West Wales (about 150 miles away) and some of the biggest stones coming from the Marlborough Downs (about 20 miles away), this was done in the Neolithic age when there were no mechanical aids!

We leave Stonehenge and head south to the medieval city of Salisbury. After a short driving tour of Salisbury highlighting the key landmarks and features of the city we will arrive at the stunning Salisbury Cathedral.

    Salisbury Cathedral

The foundations of Salisbury Cathedral were laid in 1220 and the building was consecrated in 1258, this relatively short construction period means it is one of a few English cathedrals built in the same style – early English Gothic.

The Cathedral has Britain’s tallest spire (123m or 404ft), the best of 4 surviving Magna Carta and the world’s oldest surviving mechanical clock. The Magna Carta can be viewed in the Chapter House, it was sealed by King John at Runnymede in 1215 and its importance to democracy throughout the world today can be fully appreciated.

A full floor tour provided by highly trained guides at the Cathedral is included in the tour. After the floor tour we will stop for lunch at the refectory restaurant within the cathedral that offers a wonderful view of the spire. Our tour of Salisbury and Stonehenge ends with access to Salisbury Cathedral’s majestic spire.
